Sierra Leone, a small country in West Africa, was marked by more than a decade of civil war from 1991 to 2002. The war caused a vast displacement of population which has played a major
role in the distribution and redistribution of the population across the country. It has also had an important impact on the distribution and use of natural resources and infrastructure development. About 1.4 million Sierra Leoneans, almost 25 per cent of the total population, do not live in the district they were were born in.
