FREETOWN, Sierra Leone, 2 October 2024 – The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) joined the Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs and the National Teenage Pregnancy Secretariatfor the official opening of the GADNet safe Haven, a dedicated safe space for young women and adolescent girls. This initiative, led by the Girls Advocacy and Development Network (GADNet), aims to support survivors of gender-based violence, harmful traditional practices, child marriage, rape, and teenage pregnancy.
The GADNet Haven provides a comprehensive approach to supporting young women and girls, which includes mental health and trauma recovery services, academic and technological skills training, promotion of sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and preparation for sustainable livelihoods and financial independence. In addition, the Haven , emotional well-being, and leadership development, helps young women build confidence and resilience.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, UNFPA Representative Ms. Nadia Rasheed emphasized the Haven’s importance in addressing Sierra Leone’s ongoing GBV challenges. “This safe haven symbolizes hope and opportunity for young women and girls who have faced unimaginable hardships,” Ms. Rasheed said. “We are proud to support GADNet in creating a space where survivors can heal, grow, and thrive. This is a critical step toward achieving gender equality and protecting the rights of women and girls in Sierra Leone” she further noted.
Ms. Hannah Samesther Kargbo, Executive Director of GADNet, expressed her delight at the launch of the new safe haven for young women and girls in Freetown. The haven, a long-held vision of Ms. Kargbo, will provide a nurturing environment where young women can freely express themselves and reach their full potential. Ms. Kargbo extended her gratitude to UNFPA for their invaluable support in making this vision a reality. She acknowledged UNFPA's crucial role as a partner in empowering girls in Sierra Leone, commending the UN Agency for its commitment to providing a safe haven where young women can heal, learn, and thrive.
The GADNet Haven will provide marginalized girls and young women in Sierra Leone with support and empowerment to overcome trauma and become leaders in their communities. By tackling critical issues like child marriage, teenage pregnancy, and gender-based violence, the Haven plays a vital role in advancing gender equality and protecting the rights of women and girls across the country.
The ceremony was attended by the representatives from the Secretariat for the Reduction of Teenage Pregnancy, Goal Sierra Leone, and other key stakeholders.
