In Sierra Leone, young people play an important role in national development. However, adolescent pregnancy and child marriage are issues that negatively impact their futures and hinder progress towards sustainable development and gender equality.
This strategy builds on the success of the previous two National Strategies. The 2013-2018 strategy focused on reducing teenage pregnancy, and the 2018-2022 strategy focused on both adolescent pregnancy and child marriage. With partner support, adolescent pregnancy reduced from 28 percent in 2013 to 21 percent in 2019 (DHS).
This new strategy calls for multi-sectoral efforts to address the causes of adolescent pregnancy and child marriage. By engaging communities, empowering young people, and fostering partnerships among government, NGOs, and local leaders, the strategy aims to create an environment where every girl can thrive, pursue education, and realize her dreams.
Through support to service delivery, education, and social support systems, the strategy will dismantle systemic barriers that contribute to these issues. Ending adolescent pregnancy and child marriage is a moral imperative and a commitment to the rights and potential of young people. This strategy serves as a guiding framework for all stakeholders to plan and implement actions from 2025–2030.
