The year 2025 marked the launch of UNFPA Sierra Leone’s new Country Programme (2025–2030) under the new leadership of Country Representative Kunle Adeniyi. The programmatic focus shifted toward building sustainable, digitally managed, and domestically funded systems to achieve UNFPA's transformative results.

Core Pillars of Impact

  • Family Planning & Supply Chains: UNFPA provided US$2.5 million in reproductive health commodities, covering approximately 80% of the national supply. Key achievements included launching the open mSupply system to digitalize and protect health supply chains and introducing the first-ever National Strategy for Condom Programming (2025–2029). Today, 92% of health facilities offer at least 5 modern contraceptive methods.

  • Maternal Health Excellence: To reduce preventable maternal mortality, the country adopted the Midwifery Model of Care and established Sierra Leone's first dedicated fistula center at Bo Government Hospital, which successfully completed 27 surgeries. Additionally, the MPDSR Situation Room was launched to track maternal deaths using real-time surveillance data.

  • Ending GBV & Harmful Practices: Protection frameworks were elevated via the passage of the landmark Child Rights Act of 2025. Sierra Leone also became the first country globally to deploy the GBVIMS+ data tracking system in a non-emergency context. Seven integrated one-stop centers supported 429 survivors with care, while a 24/7 centralized national hotline (116) was fully operationalized.

  • Youth Empowerment: Guided by the National Policy for Radical Inclusion, 2,500 out-of-school girls (including teenage mothers) were reintegrated into formal schooling in 2025, bringing the cumulative total to 10,000 girls since 2022. Over 72,000 learners were also reached with health and life skills curricula.

  • Population Data Systems: In preparation for the upcoming 2026 National Decennial Population and Housing Census, UNFPA successfully facilitated a high-level technical assessment that culminated in a successful National Pilot Census in December 2025. The Power of Data Initiative was also launched to strengthen cross-sector evidence-based tracking.
