Country Representative

Dr. Nestor Pepe Azandegbe

A native of Benin in West Africa, Dr. Nestor Pepe Azandegbe is a medical doctor - obstetrician gynecologist - with a master’s degree in public health.


Prior to taking up his role as Officer-in-Charge at UNFPA in Sierra Leone, Dr. Azandegbe was country representative at UNFPA in Niger.  Before his position in Niger, Dr. Azandegbe was the team lead for the reproductive and maternal health unit at the UNFPA Regional Office for West and Central Africa in Senegal. Whilst there, he coordinated the French Muskoka Fund which aimed at reducing maternal, newborn and child mortality and morbidity, and also ensuring that adolescents, particularly girls access their rights. The fund administered by the French of Foreign Affairs, supported the joint work of UNFPA, WHO, UNICEF, UN Women in eight francophone countries in West and Central Africa.


Prior to joining UNFPA, Dr. Azandegbe worked at the WHO Regional Office for Africa in the Republic of Congo where he served as Regional Advisor for the ‘Making Pregnancy Safer’, a health-sector focused initiative which aimed to contribute to the improvement of maternal and perinatal health. Under his leadership and technical guidance, almost all African countries developed their National Road Maps for accelerating the reduction of maternal and newborn mortality.


In his country of Benin, Dr. Azandegbe worked in the national health system for more than twenty years gaining extensive experience in health systems reform and served as the Director of Family Health in the Ministry of Health.  In this capacity, he worked broadly in close collaboration with economists, demographers, anthropologists, lawyers, academia, civil society and non-governmental organisations, taking a multi-disciplinary and multi-sectorial approach on the International Conference on Population and Development agenda including reproductive health and rights, maternal and child health, family planning, adolescents and youth, HIV/AIDS and nutrition
