Under the general supervision of the Representative, the Communications Officer provides effective functioning of communication and media relations in support of the Country Office programme. S/he works closely with programme staff as well as UN Agencies, Government, CSOs, Media houses and other stakeholders in support of Country Office.

S/he delivers quality services in media relations to internal and external clients mastering all relevant rules, guidelines, processes and procedures. S/he takes a client oriented and results focused approach in the service of the Country programme and UNFPA supported programmes.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Adapts processes and procedures, anticipates and manages operational requirements of the Country Office in the area of communications media relations.
  • Support the development and implementation of the country program communication strategy
  • Creates and documents knowledge about UNFPAs activities in the area of Population and Development, RH and Gender; providing news feeds to the electronic and print media.
  • Monitors local and international media for stories and articles relating to UNFPA interventions.
  • Promotes the visibility of UNFPA by serving as an effective interface between the Country Office and media houses.
  • Facilitates media programmes, interviews and documentaries to create awareness of UNFPA programmes.
  • Works with the media network to promote UNFPA’s work through the use of traditional media / social networking platforms.
  • Identifies and obtains feature stories and other media materials required to facilitate advocacy and fund-raising activities, particularly in support of resources mobilization effort.
  • Supports country office knowledge building strategies through contribution to identification,
  • Synthesis and dissemination of best practices and lessons learned directly linked to the programmes;
  • Support the maintenance and regular updating of the UNFPA Sierra Leone Electronic Media sites.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the supervisor or his/her representative.

Job Requirements

  • A Postgraduate degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or related fields.
  • 4-7 years of professional experience in the field of  public relations, communications and/or advocacy including use of  multi-media and social networking approaches with a multilateral or international organization, the private sector or governmental bodies
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and writing skills
  • Computer Proficiency in MS Office including Word, Excel and PowerPoint as well as graphic designing software such as Photoshop and others.
  • Dedication to United Nations principles and demonstrated ability to work harmoniously within a team and with different nationalities.

Language: Fluency in English and ability to write clearly and concisely.
